Delivery of tunnel boring machine a key milestone in country’s rail cargo industry, says Dr Wee

PETALING JAYA: The first of two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project has arrived from Shanghai, China and will be used for excavation works, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic).

The Transport Minister said the delivery of the TBM was a key milestone in the future of the country’s rail cargo industry as the project is set to be a land bridge linking Port Klang to Kelantan that will also connect communities in the west and east coasts of Peninsular Malaysia.

“Congratulations to Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) on the arrival of the first of two TBMs.

“I hope that the excavation works can begin smoothly as soon as possible for the ECRL’s Section C portion after the TBMs are reassembled at the main contractor’s project site in Bentong, Pahang, ” he said in a Facebook post on Friday (July 9).

The ECRL project is divided into three sections which are Section A that stretches from Kota Baru in Kelantan to Dungun in Terengganu; Section B from Dungun to Mentakab in Pahang; and Section C from Mentakab to Port Klang.

Dr Wee said based on his April 10 visit to the project’s Tunjong base camp in Kota Baru, he trusts that project and asset owner MRL and China Communications Construction (ECRL) Sdn Bhd, which is the project’s engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning contractor, will begin tunnelling operations efficiently while taking necessary Covid-19 precautions.

“We will find the right time to go to Bentong to take a closer look at these incredible machines after they are assembled and ready to operate in the next few months, ” he said.
