PETALING JAYA: A total of 231 of the new Covid-19 cases reported today were serious cases, a slight increase from the 220 cases recorded yesterday.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 91 cases were Category 3 (pneumonia), 45 were Category 4 (pneumonia, requiring oxygen) and 95 were Category 5 (critical condition and requiring a ventilator to breathe).

“On average, Category 4 cases are treated at the ICU for 14 days and Category 5 for 21 days,” said Noor Hisham in a tweet. “This increases the stress and reduces the capacity at the health ministry’s hospitals.”

Health ministry figures show a total of 909 patients currently being treated in intensive care, with 445 requiring respiratory assistance. There are a total of 124,593 active cases being treated.

The number of new cases reported today was 10,710 of which 97.9% were those with light or no symptoms. Noor Hisham said that 6,317 cases (59.0%) were in Category 1 (asymptomatic) and 4,162 cases (38.9%) in Category 2 (mild symptoms).

Today’s figures of new infections marks the sixth day in a row that the number of new cases has breached the 10,000 mark. The five-digit mark was broken for the first time on Tuesday, when the country recorded 11,079 cases – with Noor Hisham saying that increased testing and the spread of the Delta variant was behind the rise in numbers. - FMT
