TUMPAT: A 31-year-old man was arrested here last night over the smuggling of firecrackers and fireworks worth more than RM1.2 million.
Also seized in the operation at a premises in Kampung Bunuhan here was a trailer used to transport the contraband, which is believed to have been smuggled from a neighbouring country.
General Operations Force (GOF) Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said a GOF team raided the premises following public tip-offs.
"GOF personnel raided the premises about 7pm last night after receiving information that it is a transit point for smugglers.
"They discovered boxes of firecrackers and fireworks worth more than RM1.2 million.
"The owner of the premises was arrested."
Nik Ros Azhan said it is believed the contraband was smuggled into Kelantan for local distribution.
"We suspect the fireworks will be transported out from Kelantan and is intended for Hari Raya." - NST
