'Final battle': Syed Saddiq back in court tomorrow for prosecution's appeal against acquittal

KUALA LUMPUR: Muar Member of Parliament Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman will return to the Federal Court tomorrow to hear the prosecution's bid to overturn his full acquittal on corruption charges involving Bersatu youth wing Armada funds, with proceedings scheduled to last two days.

In a one-minute video shared on Instagram, Syed Saddiq said his future will once again be determined at the Federal Court tomorrow and the following day.

"I have spent more than five years undergoing investigations, trials and pressure, until I was finally acquitted on June 25 with a unanimous 3-0 decision.

"However, the fight is not over. The prosecution has appealed to overturn the acquittal.

"I need to return to court to clear my name, defend my dignity, and uphold the truth," he said.

He added that from the very first day he chose this path, he was aware of the risks.

"I could have stayed silent and followed orders. But I rejected all that for my principles. I did not run, I did not bow, and I will not stop fighting.

"This is the final battle. The last chapter. Let the court decide. I am brave because I am right, and my heart still believes that the truth cannot be killed.

"May the truth guide this struggle, and may Malaysia ultimately prevail," he said.

On June 25, Syed Saddiq was acquitted of all corruption charges by the Court of Appeal, which set aside his conviction, seven-year prison sentence, RM10 million fine, and two strokes of the rotan.

He had initially been found guilty of all charges on Nov 9, 2023.

Syed Saddiq, who was Armada chief at the time, was charged on July 22, 2021, with abetting Bersatu assistant treasurer Rafiq Hakim Razali in committing criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving RM1 million of the organisation's funds.

Previously, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy public prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin said that the hearing for the prosecution's appeal is set for Dec 11 and 12. - NST
