DAP Teluk Intan files police report over PAS man’s alleged racial labelling over graft

DAP Teluk Intan has lodged a police report over a statement alleged to have linked criminal behaviour to specific racial groups.

The (Pakatan Harapan) representative Badrul Hisham Badarudin said the remark, allegedly made by Dr Azman Ibrahim, chairman of the PAS Central Agro-Based and Environmental Sustainability Committee, crossed a racial red line by referring to races using the letters “M” and “C” and associating them with criminal acts.

“Who are the M and C races? What is the real intention in labelling a race with the letters M and C?”

“This is not just an issue of sensitivity. This is also an issue of principle and national security. Crime does not represent ethnicity. Crime does not represent religion. Crime does not represent race,” Badrul wrote.

Badrul also said linking criminal acts to certain races is a dangerous incitement that sows hatred, poisons the mindset of society and opens the door to division.

“Today, they dare to label one or two races. If left unchecked, who will be the target tomorrow? Or what other issues will be linked to racism?”

The Terengganu state executive councillor sparked controversy after linking corruption patterns to race in a social media response to remarks defending the Dayak community.

In a Facebook post yesterday (Jan 23), the councillor argued that corruption should not be conflated with dietary practices and cited statistics to claim that bribery involves all races, influenced by structural factors such as civil service composition.

“Who says those who eat pork are not involved in corruption?” is a caption that accompanies a chart posted by the PAS member.

In the chart, ethnic Chinese are shown to have been nabbed the most for giving bribes, with 630 cases, followed by other races with 518 cases, Malays with 390, and Indians with 151.

The data he shared is attributed to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, and it shows varying numbers of bribery cases across ethnic groups between 2015 and mid-2025.

“Corruption is a major problem for the country. It’s not a problem of any particular race, and it’s not an issue of what the corrupt eat.

“That’s why I presented some facts when the narrative ‘we eat pork, but we don’t receive bribes’ was brought up,” Azman said, referring to a chart which he shared in a post.

“The bottom line is, don’t deflect the issue by linking pork and corruption. Corruption is a problem for all races. Race C often gives bribes, while Race M often receives them. The factor is easy to understand because Race M dominates the civil service. Other races are also involved in corruption as well,” he added.

The comments followed a parliamentary debate in which a Sarawak MP criticised the stigmatisation of pork consumption, stressing that it had no connection to moral conduct or corruption. —  Focus Malaysia
