MCMC probing 17 over false info on fuel price hikes, electricity tariffs

PUTRAJAYA:

 The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating 17 individuals for allegedly spreading false information on fuel price hikes and new electricity tariffs which has gone viral on social media.

It said statements have been recorded from eight individuals, including in five cases involving false posts related to fuel price hikes.

“Of the five cases, statements from three suspects were recorded earlier, while the remaining two were recorded yesterday.

“There are also three cases involving the new electricity tariffs. The remaining nine suspects are still being monitored and will be called in for their statements soon,” it said in a statement today.

The investigation is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction.

MCMC said it views seriously any misuse of social media platforms intended to mislead the public through the dissemination of false information.

“The spread of such false information can create panic and public anxiety,” it said.

It added that stern action would be taken against any individual found to have violated the law. - FMT
