TANAH MERAH: Police believe they have solved the case involving two teenage cousins who were found safe at a homestay in Machang days after they were reported missing following the arrests of five suspects recently.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said investigations revealed that the girls had voluntarily left with two men they had befriended through social media.
He said the pair had arranged to meet the men at a shopping mall in Kota Baru before travelling with them to Machang.
"This is not a kidnapping case as initially speculated. Based on our investigations, the girls became acquainted with one of the suspects through social media before agreeing to meet them.
"They later followed the men to Machang, where they stayed at a homestay," he said when met after a visit to the Kelantan Agriculture Department's durian orchard in Batang Merbau here last night.
Yusoff said police had arrested five men in connection with the case and believed the arrests had effectively resolved the matter.
He said the suspects, aged in the late teens to the 20s, were detained in Machang shortly after the girls were found.
He added that the two teenagers were unharmed and had been reunited with their families.
The cousins, aged 15 and 16, were reported missing after leaving their homes in Kampung Baloh near Kok Lanas last Thursday.
They were found safe at a homestay in Machang on Saturday evening, prompting relief among family members who had launched an extensive search effort and appealed for public assistance. - NST
