JOHOR BARU: Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi has hinted at a major announcement on Saturday after claiming that "something is not right" with Johor Umno.
In a Facebook post hours before Barisan Nasional's candidate announcement, the former Rengit assemblyman said he would make an "important announcement" after reviewing the coalition's candidate list.
"Looking at the list, there is something not right with Johor Umno.
"I will make an important announcement on June 27. The latest developments in Johor Umno are worrying. I will not turn back even though I am only a small fry.
"I have said that trained, educated young people should be given a chance, but my advice was not heeded. I am taking a political leap of courage to continue the struggle," he wrote.
Sources in Johor indicated that Puad was unhappy with BN's choice of candidate for Rengit, which differed from his recommendation.
When contacted, Puad declined to comment, saying only that "Johor Umno is not independent".
BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Johor BN chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi are scheduled to unveil the coalition's candidates for all 56 seats at 2.30pm today.
On June 17, Puad, 69, announced that he would not defend the Rengit seat, citing his age. He said he had informed Zahid and Onn Hafiz of his decision.
Puad's remarks come amid unease over candidate selection in other constituencies.
Earlier, BN's Bukit Kepong division threatened to boycott the election if the seat was given to an "outsider". - NST
