JOHOR BARU: A Danga Bay restaurant was ordered to close for two days after a viral video showed a rat contaminating food at a counter.
The restaurant management said the outlet was ordered to shut from yesterday to allow investigations into the incident.
"We are complying with the directive and have carried out cleaning works throughout the restaurant," he said.
The operator of the mamak restaurant, who declined to be named, said the incident was unexpected as cleanliness had been a priority throughout its seven years of operation.
He said the restaurant only became aware of the incident after a video went viral on social media and that no customers had approached the management to lodge complaints or seek an explanation.
"We are not sure where the rat came from, but there has been a rat infestation in the area recently. It may be linked to the drainage system, as seawater at high tide can cause water to stagnate in some locations," he said.
The proprietor said the restaurant carried out monthly pest control treatment and kept records of the spraying.
He said the premises was inspected by the authorities after the incident went viral.
A video showing a rat taking food from a rojak serving area at the restaurant recently went viral.
The footage, uploaded by a customer, sparked concern among social media users over the cleanliness of the premises and the risk of food poisoning from rodent contamination. - NST
