KUALA TERENGGANU: Police are tracking down two women believed to be involved in the theft of a gold bracelet worth about RM16,000 from a jewellery shop at Batu 8, Kampung Batu Enam, Jalan Kelantan, here, yesterday morning.
Kuala Terengganu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor said the incident occurred at 10.59am yesterday. Police received a report from a sales assistant at the jewellery shop at 10.25pm.
He said the theft was discovered when a shop employee conducted a stock check and found that a 916 gold bracelet weighing 28.01g was missing.
"A check of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showed the two women entering the shop, before one of them asked the employee to show her several gold bracelets for comparison.
"The suspect then put one of the bracelets on her wrist before concealing it with her sleeve," he said.
He said the suspect also dropped the bracelet on the floor before stepping on it, then picked it up and put it into her handbag.
"At the same time, the second suspect is believed to have distracted the employee by pointing towards another gold bracelet, causing the employee not to notice her accomplice's actions.
"Both suspects then left the shop on the pretext of getting money to make payment, but did not return," he said.
He said the first suspect was wearing a grey robe, black headscarf and black face veil, while the second suspect was wearing a dark blue robe and a blue floral-patterned headscarf.
"The shop employee can identify the second suspect but could not identify the first as her face was covered by the veil.
"Police are actively tracking down both suspects and the case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code," he said. - NST
