Strong economic figures alone won’t win over voters, says Fahmi

PKR must pay attention to overcoming the everyday economic pressures felt by Malaysians instead of relying solely on strong economic figures to attract voters, says party information chief Fahmi Fadzil.

Speaking at the PKR Congress here, Fahmi said figures such as GDP growth, unemployment rate, government revenue and investment inflows represented the “peripheral” economy.

“These figures reflect the broader economic picture, but they can feel disconnected from the everyday experiences of ordinary people.”

Fahmi contrasted this with issues Malaysians feel more strongly about such as wages, cost of living, and RON95 prices.

He said the recent Negeri Sembilan state election, which saw Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional formed the state government after winning 25 seats, demonstrated how the PH government’s performance was unable to sway voters.

Fahmi stressed that addressing Malaysians’ economic concerns was important in countering politics that played on their emotions.

“The Negeri Sembilan election has proven that we are facing a situation where… emotion outweighed performance.

“It is very clear that to overcome fear politics, we have to consider the issues that are close to the people.” - FMT
