Man to be charged after assaulting motorcyclist over loud exhaust

MERSING: A man is expected to be charged tomorrow with assaulting a motorcyclist at a convenience store in Jalan Ismail here on Friday after allegedly becoming angry over the rider's loud exhaust, which he claimed had woken his baby.

Mersing district police chief Superintendent Abdul Razak Abdullah Sani said police received information about the incident after a 1-minute-45-second video of it went viral on social media.

He said the incident occurred about 1am after the suspect became angry after claiming that the victim had cut in front of his vehicle and revved his motorcycle loudly, causing the baby held by his wife to wake up and cry.

"The suspect then assaulted the victim.

"As a result, the victim sought treatment at hospital and was diagnosed with soft tissue injuries to his left cheek and abdomen," he said in a statement today.

Abdul Razak said police opened an investigation paper and investigated the case under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.

He said the investigation paper had been completed and referred to the Johor deputy public prosecutor today for further action.

"The suspect has been ordered to be charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code and the charge will be made at the Mersing Magistrate's court tomorrow.

"If convicted, the suspect faces up to one year in prison, a maximum fine of RM2,000, or both," he said.

Abdul Razak also advised the public not to act on their emotions, as this could ultimately cause harm to themselves.  - NST
