Former Malaysia Airlines (MAS) CEO Peter Bellew's resignation from the company should not have come as a surprise, at least for Khazanah Nasional Bhd and MAS.
This is because Bellew had handed in his resignation letter to Khazanah on Oct 8.
Asked why MAS did not make a statement the very next day on his departure, Bellew said: "I think because they tried everything in their power to get me to stay".
On Oct 17, it was reported that Bellew would be returning to Ryanair.
However, MAS had described the announcement made by Ryanair as "unexpected".
Meanwhile, Bellew, at a press conference held in Petaling Jaya today, refused to answer on the penalty to be paid for his early resignation.
"That's to be discussed between Khazanah and myself. That's a private matter," he said.
Pressed further, Bellew insisted that it was a private matter.
Set to return to Ryanair on Dec 1, Bellew's contract with MAS was supposed to end in June 2019.
Meanwhile, commenting on his replacement Izham Ismail (photo), Bellew said it was a "good thing" that a local was appointed as CEO of MAS.
"As a 'Mat Salleh', there were certain things I could help with, that I could bring."
Izham, he said, was the first person he met on his first day of work. Recalling that first day, Bellew said they worked together and finished at 2am.
"So, he's a great man, a wonderful operator, extremely knowledgeable and very personable. I'm sure you'll get to like him.
"I hope you will give him support. It's never going to be an easy job and the expectations for the nation are huge, but I think he's the right man for the job. I think the staff will rally around him," Bellew added.
Asked whether there was a reason for Khazanah to appoint a Malaysian, he said: "I think Izham is the best person for the job at the moment. I think they're lucky to have him."- Mkini
