A minor commotion broke out during a Deepavali event hosted by the Federal Territories Ministry when the underprivileged, particularly senior citizens started to push their way to receive a RM100 cash handout.
The incident happened as “purple packets” were distributed by Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.
Hundreds of people – including people in wheelchairs and those with children – started to push each other in their eagerness to collect the cash. Security personnel and enforcement officers struggled to control the melee.
The event, which was jointly hosted by Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan, near Kuala Lumpur City Hall at 3pm today.
Earlier, Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan had given a total of RM23,000 to 2,300 Hindus who had registered with the DBKL. This group of recipients was given a tag to receive the money.
The recipients of the second round of contribution given by Tengku Adnan and his wife Enny Beatrice Ferlat Kusumo Anggraini, were mainly non-Hindus.
When asked for comments, Tengku Adnan said the commotion was nothing out of the ordinary.
“Some of them took twice, but it’s okay,” he said.
