The organisers of last Saturday’s “Love Malaysia, End Kleptocracy” rally have lodged a police report over claims that some of their phones had been hacked prior to the rally.
Rally secretariat deputy director Howard Lee claimed two threatening text messages were sent to “random people” from phone numbers belonging to secretariat members Medaline Chang and Chin Pei Chi.
One of the messages read “We want your money, f*** you”, while the other said “We have your picture, pay me money”.
Both Chang and Chin only discovered what had happened after they started receiving calls and texts in reply to the threatening messages the night before the rally. They deny they ever sent those messages.
“(It seems like) this happened after they sent out press notices about the rally (to media contacts) through their phones.
“Whatever happened fits the profile of ‘spoofing’, which means using someone’s phone number to send messages,” Lee (photo) told Malaysiakini when contacted.
The rally held at Padang Timur in Petaling Jaya was organised by Pakatan Harapan.
Chang had lodged a police report on the night of the incident but another, a “more detailed” report, was made by Chin at about 4pm today at Pudu police station following a lack of police action, added Lee.
Chin was assisted and accompanied by lawyer Quratulain Atiqah.
Constable Anas Taufiq Abd Halim accepted the report and Malaysiakini has sighted the report.
“This type of spoofing was previously used to target political leaders but now they are using it against rally staff and volunteers.
“This is an infringement of their privacy. As the secretariat deputy director, I stand in solidarity with them,” added Lee.- Mkini
