PETALING JAYA: Rumours are swirling over who will take over national carrier Malaysia Airlines following news that its CEO Peter Bellew plans to rejoin former employer Ryanair.
According to the New Straits Times, Mass Rapid Transit Corp (MRT Corp) CEO Shahril Mokhtar and Malaysia Airlines chief financial officer Omar Siddiq Amin Noer Rashid are said to be among the top contenders for the position.
Shahril, who was first rumoured to be a front-runner for the post following Christoph Mueller’s resignation last April, was group managing director of Prasarana Malaysia Bhd from September 2010 to Jan 1, 2015.
Before that, he served as chief operating officer for the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) and general manager of corporate planning at RapidKL.
While serving in that position, he was seconded as an adviser to the Economic Planning Unit in the Prime Minister’s Department where he was involved in drafting the Land Public Transport Act 2010.
He is currently director of Prasarana and MyHSR (High Speed Rail) Corp.
Omar Siddiq, meanwhile, has been Malaysia Airlines chief financial officer since January 2016. He has also been an executive director since September 2015.
Before that, he was director of investments at Khazanah Nasional Bhd and had also served as a director in investment banking at CIMB Investment Bank Bhd.
From April 2009 to February 2010, he was non-independent and non-executive director of UEM Land Holdings Bhd.
He has been director of Bandar Nusajaya Development Sdn Bhd since April 2009.
He was also previously with PricewaterhouseCoopers, serving in 2005 as an executive director in its corporate finance division.
In a surprise announcement yesterday, Ryanair said Bellew would be leaving Malaysia Airlines after just over a year in charge.
Upon his return to the Irish airline, Bellew will serve as chief operations officer with the specific responsibility of helping it address a pilot staffing issue that led to thousands of flight cancellations.
Bellew was director of flight operations before he left Ryanair in 2014. He joined Malaysia Airlines as chief operations officer in September 2015 and took over as chief executive in July last year. -FMT
