Harapan to tackle Malay-Islam issue, cost of living in Semenyih

SEMENYIH POLLS
 | Pakatan Harapan is set to focus on issues related to the cost of living and the opposition's fanning of Malay-Islam sentiments in the lead-up to next month's Semenyih by-election.

According to Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin, the Harapan by-election machinery is also ready to provide explanations to constituents on several other issues frequently played up by the opposition.
"The opposition twists the Malay-Islam issue as if Harapan does not fight for Malay rights. This is wrong. We will take the opportunity to explain this thoroughly.
"Don't forget, people still remember the problems in the previous administration," he said today at a press conference in Semenyih.
Muhyiddin also noted that the opposition has been trying to show to the people that DAP does not support the other components of Harapan.
"We will counter this allegation," he said.
The people are concerned with the cost of living, Muhyiddin added, pointing out that the Selangor government has outlined several programmes to tackle the issue in the state, especially in Semenyih.
The Bersatu leader, who chaired a meeting with the Semenyih division of his party and village chiefs, also cited several other local concerns, such as floods and overcrowded hospitals.
"One of the issues surrounding the locals in Semenyih is congestion at the Kajang hospital and government clinics. So, we take this into consideration, and relay the matter to the Health Ministry."
'Don't be complacent'
Muhyiddin reminded Semenyih Bersatu not to be complacent with what is achieved in last year's general election, when it won the state seat with a nearly 9,000-vote majority.
"We cannot take things easy because we don't know the opposition's strategy. Will Umno and PAS join forces? If so, we will have to come up with a strategy.
"The cooperation between PAS and Umno worked in Cameron Highlands, but the situation in Semenyih is different. Not all PAS members agree with the cooperation."
Muhyiddin added that the Harapan candidate will be announced on Feb 14, two days before nomination.
The Semenyih state seat fell vacant after the death of its Bersatu incumbent Bakhtiar Mohd Nor on Jan 11.
Polling for the by-election takes place on March 2, with early voting on Feb 26. - Mkini
