KUALA LUMPUR: Wan Saiful Wan Jan said politicians, including from the opposition front, should be more responsible when speaking at public forums, especially about ethnic relations.
The chairman of National Higher Education Fund Corporation expressed concern about issues concerning ethnic relations being politicised.
“I think many people are talking about it, but not many are discussing it in a rational and calm way.
“So be responsible in what we debate today and how we do that,” he said in reference to political developments in the country at the National Economic Forum held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here today.
The theme of the forum was “Empowering Public-Private Collaboration — Building A Competitive Nation”.
Wan Saiful, who is also PPBM Supreme Council member, participated in a panel discussion on “Malaysia’s Future — What Should the Government Do”.
This trend, he said, was worrying, adding that politicians should discuss such matters in a more rational and measured way because it involved a sensitive topic.
“We have a situation where there are politicians out there who have no qualms whatsoever in dividing the country even further in order to have a chance to retain or to win power and this is the wrong direction to go.
“This is not healthy, I think we need to have more responsible politics,” said Wan Saiful to thundering applause from the audience.
“This is not what we fought for in the last election. We fought under the banner of unity; we should ensure there’s unity,” he added.
He reminded politicians that the country did not revolve around them. - Mkini
