PKR today reminded its members not to keep questioning the prime ministerial succession plan for their own political interests.
PKR information chief Shamsul Iskandar Akin said those who raised doubts over whether party president Anwar Ibrahim would succeed Dr Mahathir Mohamad was betraying the party as well as the people.
Shamsul said such parties had personal agendas that “clearly contradict the reform agenda and do not meet the wishes of the people who voted for Pakatan Harapan in the last election.”
“PKR have said many times that it will honour the agreement and the transition of power will be handled in a principled and democratic manner,” he said in a statement.
While Shamsul did not give names, it is clear he was referring to PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali.
Earlier today, Anwar said Azmin’s call for prime minister Dr Mahathir to serve out a full term was his personal opinion as only the Pakatan Harapan presidential council had the authority to make such a decision.
He said his deputy’s comment on about a “backdoor government” was also a personal view.
Azmin yesterday said Dr Mahathir should be allowed to serve out the five-year. This is not the first time he has made such a call.
Azmin has been on less than friendly terms with Anwar since party polls last year. He is also embroiled in a sex video scandal which he has said was the work of his enemies to ruin him.
Anwar loyalists in the party meanwhile have urged Azmin to step down following a gay sex video scandal.
In his statement today, Shamsul advised all parties to focus on issues concerning the country, especially on measures to revive the economy.
This appears to be a dig at Azmin, who is the economic affairs minister.
“PKR also urges all parties to use the right channels in voicing their views and maintaining order within the party as well as among the component parties to maintain the integrity of Pakatan Harapan,” said Shamsul, who is known as an Anwar loyalist.
