Bersatu secretary-general Marzuki Yahya today confirmed speculations that former Johor menteri besar Osman Sapian is among the candidates being considered for the Tanjung Piai by-election.
Marzuki was asked to confirm the speculation after photographs congratulating Osman (photo, above) made the rounds on social media.
However, Marzuki said a final decision has yet to be made.
“His name is listed, but we have yet to make a decision.
“It was the grassroots that proposed. There are other names which include the former menteri besar,” he told journalists at the Parliament lobby today.
Osman hails from Pontian, the parliamentary constituency neighbouring Tanjung Piai.
Osman, who is currently the Kempas state assemblyperson, served as Johor menteri besar from May 2018 until April 2019.
He resigned amid a clash between Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who leads the party at the central level, and the Johor palace.
Marzuki said a decision will be made soon, and Bersatu will decide on a date to announce the candidate.
The Tanjung Piai by-election was called following the passing of its late Bersatu MP Md Farid Md Rafik, 43, who died from a heart attack last month.
Rafik, who was a deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, wrested the Tanjung Piai seat from MCA’s Wee Jeck Seng with a 524-vote majority in the 2018 general election.
The Tanjung Piai by-election is fixed on Nov 2 while polling day will take on Nov 16.
