KUALA LUMPUR: Dr Mahathir Mohamad, as PPBM chairman, is the only individual who has absolute powers in the party, its secretary-general Marzuki Yahya said.
Marzuki said that under Clause 16.2.1 of the party constitution, the chairman is the main leader of the party and responsible for policies and the smooth running of party matters.
“Meanwhile, according to Clause 16.2.2, it is the chairman’s duty to call and chair meetings of the party’s top leadership council,” he said in a statement.
As such, he said, all actions on PPBM’s direction were subject to Mahathir’s decision as the chairman.
Earlier today, PPBM president Muhyiddin Yassin had issued a statement saying he was the acting chairman pending party elections.
He said this was because Mahathir had resigned as chairman on Monday.
Muhyiddin said Clause 16.9 of the party constitution stipulated that if the chairman resigned or was dismissed, the president shall be acting chairman until an election was held to pick a new chairman.
On Monday, Mahathir resigned as the prime minister and later stepped down as PPBM chairman.
The next day, the party’s supreme council unanimously rejected his resignation as chairman.
On Thursday, Marzuki issued a statement saying that after much discussions and consideration, Mahathir decided to return as the chairman with immediate effect. - FMT
