After GE14 loss, Idris can’t expect to contest Bukit Gantang, says source

A Bersatu source said PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad could consider contesting the Parit Buntar seat which was last held by Amanah’s Mujahid Yusof Rawa.

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu is expected to field a candidate for the Bukit Gantang seat despite PAS’ intention to reclaim the constituency after losing it in the 14th general election (GE14), says a source.

PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad had won the seat in 2013 with a majority of 986 votes. In GE14, Umno’s Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal won the seat with 22,450 votes, defeating PKR’s Khadri Khalid (18,361) and Idris (16,052).

Hussin then left Umno in June 2018 to be an independent MP, before joining Bersatu two years later.

A Bersatu source told FMT that the agreement between his party and PAS was that those who had held seats prior to the dissolution of Parliament would get to defend them in the 15th general election (GE15).

The number of votes garnered by each candidate in GE14 will also be taken into account.

“If he (Idris) wants, then he has to follow the agreement. He lost (in GE14), and came in third. Hussin got more than 22,000 votes, but Idris only got 16,000.

“He’s far behind. If he wants (to contest the seat), we have to consider these figures too.”

The source said Hussin was also keen on defending his seat, while Bersatu was sticking to the agreement that those who held seats prior to Parliament’s dissolution should defend them in GE15.

“In a meeting with grassroots leaders, Bersatu president (Muhyiddin Yassin) mentioned that PAS could find somewhere else to contest.

“Since (Idris) is a vice-president, he can go anywhere,” the source said, suggesting that Idris should go for the Parit Buntar seat against Amanah’s Mujahid Yusof Rawa.

When contacted, Hussin said he would leave his fate to the Perikatan Nasional leadership, though he was optimistic of his chances at defending his seat in GE15.

FMT has reached out to Idris and PAS leaders for comment. - FMT
