KPJ Healthcare apologises over ‘kolam’ incident, suspends staff

KPJ Healthcare says it lodged a police report over the action of its employee, seen here vandalising the Deepavali ‘kolam’.

PETALING JAYA: A private hospital operator has apologised to the public over a viral video that showed an employee at one of its hospitals stepping on a Deepavali “kolam” on its premises and has since suspended those involved.

In a statement, KPJ Healthcare Bhd said it does not condone such acts, adding that the incident “in no way reflects its culture, values or practices”.

“We would like to publicly apologise to all Malaysians, particularly to the Indian community, with regard to a video that has gone viral over an incident at one of our hospitals.

“We are disheartened by the irresponsible actions of these individuals and they have been suspended pending further investigation,” it said.

KPJ Healthcare added that it had lodged a police report over the incident and will continue to work closely with the authorities on the matter.

Earlier today, FMT reported that the man involved has been arrested after surrendering himself to the police yesterday.

Klang Utara police chief S Vijaya Rao told FMT that another man who recorded the act was also arrested.

He said the duo had turned themselves in at the Klang Utara district police headquarters last night.

KPJ Klang Specialist Hospital released a statement last night, after the video went viral, condemning the action of its employee, saying it had started an internal investigation.

“KPJ Klang does not condone any act of disrespect among its staff within the compound of the hospital. Stern action will be taken if they are found to be involved,” it said.

The video clip showed a man clad in “baju Melayu” and songkok stepping on the “kolam” which was made especially for Deepavali. He was seen using his foot on parts of the decoration. In the clip, an onlooker was also heard uttering the word “vandalism”. - FMT
