After months of waiting, family and lawyer want answers on Vinosiny's death

The cause of death of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) student S Vinosiny is still unclear, even though it has been almost five months since she passed away.

Therefore, her family and their lawyer have demanded an inquest to be held immediately on the matter to prevent the same tragedy from happening again on the university’s campus.

In a statement to Malaysiakini, Vinosiny’s father, R Sivakumar Rajoo, pleaded for an immediate inquest into his daughter’s death.

“It has been almost five months since the passing of Vinosiny in UUM.

“But up to now, the inquest into the death of Vinosiny (above) has not been held. The family also have not received a timeline on when the inquest will be held.

“Our family pleads to the coroner to expedite the inquest, given the seriousness of this case and how its result could also greatly affect other students,” Sivakumar said.

‘How long must family wait?’

The family’s lawyer, M Manoharan, also expressed his disappointment in the alleged inaction of the authorities.

“I am very disappointed that the attorney-general has still not directed for an inquest to be held in this matter.

“Why are the authorities dragging their feet in the matter?” Manoharan asked.

He claimed that the silence by the authorities is harming the family members.

“The life of an ambitious student was taken away in her hostel room due to electrocution.

“UUM must take responsibility. How long does the family need to wait to know the truth about the death of Vinosiny? We want answers,” Manoharan stressed.

Vinosiny died in her dorm room at UUM’s campus in Sintok, Kedah, on May 21.

The accounting student was suspected to have suffered a fatal electric shock, something which the family claimed was backed by injuries on her body and the post-mortem findings.

UUM has been accused of not being forthcoming on the circumstances of her death. However, the university apologised to the family on May 31 and vowed full cooperation with the family to find out the truth.

Sivakumar had given his statement to the police in Kedah on June 3 but there has been no further progress since. - Mkini
