KOTA KINABALU: Days after announcing his departure from Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) to join Warisan, Bandau assemblyman Wetrom Bahanda is rumoured to have joined Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM).
According to a source, Wetrom met KDM president Peter Anthony yesterday and filled out a membership form.
“Yes, he came to see Datuk (Peter) and stated his intention to join KDM. He then filled out the form,” said the source.
“However, Wetrom said he will make an announcement (about joining KDM) in the near future, so we will wait.”
Photos of Wetrom filling out the membership form and shaking hands with Peter went viral on social media earlier today.
When contacted, Wetrom would only say he would “make an announcement soon”.
KDM was founded earlier this year by Peter and another assemblyman, Juil Nuatim, after they left Warisan.
The party is pro-government and has applied to join GRS, but no decision has been made on the matter yet.
Wetrom announced his departure from Bersatu and GRS to join Warisan on Saturday, as well as his intention to run for the Kota Marudu parliamentary seat on the Warisan ticket.
On Sunday, he met Warisan president Shafie Apdal to formally extend his best wishes to him.
Shafie said while he appreciated Wetrom’s greetings, it would not guarantee that he would be chosen as Warisan’s candidate in Kota Marudu for the 15th general election (GE15).
Wetrom, who contested under Perikatan Nasional in the 2020 state election, won the Bandau state seat with a majority of 3,363 votes.
After GRS formed the state government, he was appointed as an assistant minister to Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor.- FMT
