Dr M heads to Langkawi to check on 'worrying' floods

Dr Mahathir Mohamad has expressed concern over the flooding which occurred in Langkawi yesterday.

The island’s incumbent MP will be heading there today to see the aftereffects himself and urged residents and tourists to be careful.

“I hope residents and visitors to Langkawi will be alert and avoid getting themselves into danger,” he said in a brief video on Twitter this morning.

Hours of heavy rain triggered floods in several areas at the tourist hotspot.

As of this morning, 44 people from 11 families were still at flood evacuation centres.

Besides flooding, the heavy rains also caused river surges at the famed Telaga Tujuh waterfall.

This led to 44 hikers getting stranded - cut off by the raging river. They were rescued by emergency responders.

Mahathir - who will be 98 next year - is seeking another term as Langkawi MP.

He warned that climate change would make flooding this year more severe and that holding elections during the flood season could lead to loss of life.
