Pakatan Harapan has named opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim as the coalition’s prime ministerial candidate for the upcoming 15th general election which will be held on Nov 19.
In making the announcement, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that the endorsement was decided after a Harapan leaders’ retreat previously in Port Dickson and Seremban.
“We are not only endorsing anyone as the prime minister candidate but it’s a fact that we want to put forth this figure - a leader who has been tested and humiliated for 11 years.
“Therefore, entering GE15, Harapan would like to offer to the people, if the mandate is given, a name which is Anwar (for PM),” he added.
Saifuddin also confirmed that the coalition had sorted out seat negotiations among its component parties - PKR, DAP, Amanah and Upko.
“I would like to announce that the negotiation process involving the Harapan negotiation committee has been settled.
“Regarding negotiations with non-Harapan parties, we will settle it in the next few days,” he added.
Also present at the event were representatives from PSM including its chairperson Dr Michael Jeyakumar, secretary-general Sivarajan Arumugam, deputy secretary-general Bawani KS and central committee Chong Yee Shan.
However, no representative from fledgling Muda, another party said to be forming an electoral pact with the coalition, was sighted at the convention.
Speaking to reporters after the event, Anwar said an announcement will be made regarding seat negotiation with non-Harapan parties.
“There are (seats allocated for non-Harapan parties) but it is being negotiated.
“Our offer is to use Harapan’s logo when we contest in the general election,” he added. - Mkini
