Latiff: Still not too late for caretaker PM to sack us

A member of the caretaker cabinet has challenged caretaker prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to remove the former.

This challenge was issued by Abdul Latiff Ahmad, whom Ismail Sabri appointed in 2021 as a minister of special functions.

"We are still members of the 'caretaker' cabinet. It is not too late to be sacked. Perhaps the ninth prime minister can create history by sacking a cabinet member during 'injury time'," Latiff (above, right) said in a statement.

This was in response to Ismail Sabri jokingly stating that he should have sacked the 12 cabinet members who petitioned the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to protest against dissolving Parliament this year.

At the time, Ismail Sabri also claimed that he had twice informed his cabinet of his intention to dissolve Parliament.

‘Cabinet not consulted’

Latiff disputed Ismail Sabri's version of events while stating that during the last cabinet meeting on Oct 7, the premier did not respond to a minister's query on when an election would be held.

"As far as I can remember, the ninth prime minister never sought a mandate from the cabinet on when to dissolve Parliament.

"The ninth prime minister wanted us to focus on disaster relief preparation, the north-east monsoon and inflation rather than the next general election.

"If the ninth prime minister had stated his intent to dissolve Parliament clearly and sincerely with us, I'm sure the cabinet would have agreed," he added.

Previously, Ismail Sabri blamed the 12 ministers for his decision to dissolve Parliament amidst repeated suggestions by some government agencies that it should be held off until the monsoon season was over.

Ismail Sabri argued that his position became untenable after the dozen petitioned the Agong behind his back. - Mkini
