NGO calls Harapan ‘hypocrite’ over Negeri Sembilan logging tender

The environmental NGO Peka has expressed disappointment after the Negeri Sembilan Forestry Department announced a tender for a logging contract in its permanent forest reserves.

“As our country faces many disasters caused by a failure in forest management, Negeri Sembilan should be protecting the state’s natural treasures as a defence against global warming and climate change that is driving the current extreme weather,” it said in a statement today.

Taking aim at Pakatan Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim (above), Peka said Anwar can be considered a hypocrite for allowing this in a state controlled by the coalition.

It said Anwar’s office had previously invited environmental groups to submit questions to the incumbent Port Dickson MP for him to ask in Parliament.

In his capacity as the opposition leader, Anwar had also invited environmental groups to the Climate Change Symposium held at the Parliament building in September.

The Negeri Sembilan Forestry Department issued a notice on Oct 5 inviting bids for a contract to extract logs from several compartments in the Lenggeng forest reserve and Gapau forest reserve.

The notice says it involves an area of 94.66ha, which is equivalent to more than 130 football fields. This is ostensibly to pave way for road construction works between Kampung Ganu and Ulu Beranang.

Bids for the tender must be submitted by noon on Oct 26. - Mkini
