Sarawak DAP chairperson Chong Chieng Jen has indicated that not all of the party’s incumbent MPs in the state will be defending their seats in the upcoming 15th general election (GE15).
He implied that those who have not been serving their constituency adequately may be dropped, though he did not mention any names.
“As a candidate, the basic requirement is that you have to serve the people not only during the election period but also before the election.
“By looking at those active on the ground serving the people, you can roughly know who are those candidates,” Chong (above) said, as quoted by The Borneo Post today.
The incumbent Stampin MP said this while responding to a question on whether he would be defending his seat.
The party has no issue with finding potential candidates for the constituencies, he added.
Besides Chong, other incumbent DAP lawmakers in Sarawak are Dr Kelvin Yii (Bandar Kuching), Alice Lau (Lanang), Oscar Ling (Sibu), Wong Ling Biu (Sarikei), and Mordi Bimol (Mas Gading).
Chong said DAP will also be fielding candidates in Serian and Bintulu.
“Previously, there was the Kapit seat but our grassroots members there felt that PKR has a better candidate and so we let them contest,” he added.
Chong also said they had informed all Sarawak DAP candidates about their selection before Parliament was dissolved on Oct 10.
Subsequently, the announcement of the finalised candidates will be held in Sibu on Oct 22 and in Kuching on Oct 23.
Chong said DAP’s cooperation with fellow Pakatan Harapan component parties PKR and Amanah in Sarawak remains strong and that they have completed their seat negotiations.
PKR will be contesting about 18 seats, DAP in the eight seats mentioned earlier, whereas Amanah will field candidates in the remaining constituencies in Sarawak. - Mkini
