Our weakness is we cannot listen, says Anwar

Anwar Ibrahim, a former education minister, says the ‘confused’ education system needs to change if a new government takes over.

PETALING JAYA: PKR president Anwar Ibrahim says it is unreasonable for the education system not to take into consideration the views of parents and, more importantly, teachers.

“If there is a mentality of arrogance, as present among some of our leadership, where teachers aren’t allowed to speak up, freedom of thought will be constrained,” he said in a video on Facebook.

Anwar, who is also the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman, served as education minister from 1986 to 1991.

“What is our weakness? We cannot listen. No ability to listen to reprimands or critical perspectives,” he said.

If a change in Malaysia’s leadership were to take place, he said, this “confused” system needed to be changed.

Though he did not cite any incident, the timing of Anwar’s statement coincided with the case of mathematics teacher Fadli Salleh, who had raised concerns over the primary school mathematics syllabus.

On Sunday, Fadli revealed that the education ministry’s disciplinary board had issued him a letter, warning him of possible dismissal or demotion, for voicing his opinions against the mathematics syllabus which he claimed was “too advanced”.

“I was only speaking honestly. The syllabus is too dense and advanced. There are too many students in each class and they have to learn many other subjects, so the time spent on core subjects, such as mathematics, is too short.

“Why does the education ministry want to sack me? Is it because I am speaking the truth? They can’t handle the truth. They only want to hear flattery and compliments,” he said.

Yesterday, Fadli said the education services disciplinary board decided that he did not breach any rules, and he would not face any disciplinary action for airing his grievances on social media.

He also said all the charges against him had been dropped.

The SK (1) Gombak teacher said netizens had played a huge part in the board’s decision. - FMT
