PETALING JAYA: Puad Zarkashi has hit back at a taunt by a former Bersatu MP that Umno is a “comical” party, after the latter criticised the caretaker prime minister for a statement he made in jest.
The Umno Supreme Council member highlighted a 2019 news report where Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad had declared that he and five others were “brave” after they left Umno to become independents.
Apart from Latiff, the other five who quit Umno were Rosol Wahid (Hulu Terengganu); Shabudin Yahaya (Tasik Gelugor), Hamzah Zainudin (Larut); Fasiah Mohd Fakeh (Sabak Bernam) and Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz (Tanah Merah).
“Was Latiff joking when he said this?” he said in a Facebook post.
Puad also said it was better to be in a party that jokes a lot than join one that comprised liars and “frogs” – a term used to describe defectors.
Latiff had labelled Umno a “comical” party after Ismail Sabri Yaakob said he was merely joking when he said that he could have sacked 12 ministers from Perikatan Nasional (PN) over their letter to the King objecting to the dissolution of Parliament.
Ismail said this after Latiff, the former special functions minister, hit out at him over the remarks, saying there was no need to fire the PN ministers as they could resign on their own. - FMT
