Umno leader: Harapan will easily win Alor Setar if pitted against MCA

BN should let Umno contest in the Alor Setar parliamentary seat in the 15th general election (GE15) as Pakatan Harapan will have an easy win if it is pitted against MCA.

This according to Alor Setar Umno division chief Yusof Ismail, in stressing why the seat should not be given to MCA just because it is the party’s “traditional seat”.

“The Harapan candidate does not even have to come out to campaign (if BN fields an MCA candidate), he can sleep at home and hug his wife,” Berita Harian quoted Yusof (above) saying after officiating the Alor Setar Umno division’s meeting last night.

For the record, Alor Setar was a traditional MCA seat held by the party since the 1955 general election, before PKR seized it in the 13th general election.

In the 14th general election, PKR’s Chan Ming Kai successfully defended the seat in a three-way contest.

Yusof claimed that MCA did nothing following its loss in GE14.

“If it is their traditional seat, MCA should have mobilised its machinery to woo back the voters fresh after its loss,” he said.

Umno has better chance

According to Yusof, Umno stands a better chance of winning the parliamentary seat as the party had been helping out some 44,000 families in the constituency in the last four years, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic hit.

“We received requests for help from 44,000 families and we helped all of them regardless of their background.

“So if the MCA candidate is chosen to contest in the Alor Setar parliamentary seat, the Harapan candidate can win the election ‘comfortably’, he just has to go out and show his photograph. But if it is an Umno candidate, the Harapan candidate has to fold up his sleeves for a fight,” Yusof quipped.

He added that he would lobby the BN leadership to field an Umno candidate to contest the parliamentary seat.

“If Umno wins in Alor Setar, BN and MCA would win too. My concern is MCA was not with the constituents when they were going through hardship, and they would struggle to get Malay votes.

“As for Umno, we have submitted five names on behalf of the Alor Setar Umno division (to be shortlisted as a candidate), and we have the machinery to make it work. If Umno is not chosen (to contest), all that will go to waste.” - Mkini
