PETALING JAYA: Many areas in Klang and Shah Alam were hit by flash floods early this morning following heavy rain that lasted throughout the night.

Other areas in Petaling and Hulu Langat were also affected, according to Bernama.

Former Klang MP Charles Santiago said he received many calls from people in Klang who were upset and worried about the situation.

“Parts of Klang and Shah Alam are submerged in water as high as 2ft. It’s 48 hours to  polling day. Where is the Election Commission’s floods SOP?” he said on Twitter.

Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari shared on Twitter that he was in Taman Melawis, Klang, at 2.45am to monitor the situation there.

Several people took to social media to report that a number of areas in Sepang were also affected, with roads closed because of floods.

Earlier, Bernama reported that the Selangor fire and rescue department had received emergency calls for help from 27 areas because of rising floodwaters, and one incident involving a landslide.

In a later update, the department said eight new relief centres have been opened, with a total of 11 active as at 8am.

Some 44 victims have been evacuated to these centres, with most of them coming from Bangi and Kajang.

The department has deployed 130 personnel and 17 boats for rescue efforts.

At 10.40pm yesterday, the meteorological department had warned of heavy rain lasting until 4am in the whole of Perlis, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka.

It said multiple areas in Kedah, Perak, Kelantan, Pahang, and Johor would also be affected.

In the past week alone, Shah Alam and Klang have been hit by floods multiple times.

Previously, Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional leaders had repeatedly urged Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob against calling for elections towards the year end in view of possible floods during the monsoon season. - FMT
