ROS notifies PN of 'deregistration' - sources

 

Perikatan Nasional risks being deregistered after the Registrar of Societies (ROS) reportedly issued the coalition a letter notifying it of the decision and directing it to cease all activities under the PN name.

The development comes amid a leadership realignment within PN, with PAS assuming greater control as Bersatu - which led the coalition in its early years - has become increasingly sidelined.

Malaysiakini understands that the letter was sent yesterday to PN chairperson Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar (below) and secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan, giving the coalition 30 days to respond.

“I can confirm that the PN leadership received a letter from the ROS yesterday,” a coalition source told Malaysiakini.

PN component parties are also understood to have been informed. Malaysiakini has contacted the ROS for confirmation.

PAS-Bersatu tensions escalate

PAS has been gaining dominance over the PN leadership in recent months, including during several state elections. On June 26, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang criticised Bersatu’s plan to contest a large number of seats in the Johor state election, saying the party lacked the machinery to do so.

PAS had also said its machinery would not be mobilised to support Bersatu’s Johor campaign. In the Negeri Sembilan state election on Aug 1, Bersatu contested under its own logo rather than PN’s.

On Aug 7, Hadi (below) said PAS no longer regarded Bersatu as part of the PN family, following Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin’s stated intention to form a new political alliance.

Muhyiddin was previously reported to have said that Bersatu would form a new, stronger coalition with several other organisations after the Negeri Sembilan state election.

On Aug 11, the ROS confirmed it had received an official complaint from Bersatu alleging that the party was excluded from PN’s supreme council meeting on July 16, among other issues concerning its position in the coalition.

Malaysiakini has also contacted Takiyuddin for confirmation. PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari and PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden said they had no information on the matter when contacted. - Mkini
