GEORGE TOWN: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has repeated his call for the Sarawak government to allow Opposition leaders to enter the state in the run-up to the state election and hopes to get a “warm welcome” when he touches down there tomorrow morning.
Lim said he had written to Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem, urging him to “play fair.”
“First off, I would like to say that the DAP supports Sarawak’s immigration autonomy, they can block whoever they deem fit.
“But it is not fair to bar Opposition leaders and members when they are not involved in any criminal activities whatsoever.
“And to say that Opposition leaders can visit after the election is a pure mockery of the powers vested in you,” he said referring to Adenan in a press conference today.
Lim hoped that he and national DAP vice-chairman Chow Kon Yeow would be allowed to enter Sarawak tomorrow.
“Chow and I will be on a 7.10am AirAsia flight to Kuching. We hope we will get a warm welcome,” he said.
Recently, a string of Opposition figures and their party workers were barred from entering Sarawak.
Ubah bird mascot creator and Selangor DAP member Ooi Leng Hang and Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching were barred entry at the Kuching airport and deported to Kuala Lumpur last week.
More recently, Penang executive councillors Abdul Malik Kassim and Dr Afif Bahardin was also booted out apart from Petaling Jaya DAP MP Tony Pua and his Seputeh colleague Teresa Kok were also denied entry much earlier.
Sarawak dissolved its state assembly on Monday to pave way for the upcoming polls on May 7.
The election regulators have set Apr 25 for nomination and May 3 for early voting.
The deadline for international postal votes is set at April 25 while ballots for the military, police and media personnel must be handed in to returning officers by April 27.
There are 1,138,650 eligible voters in 82 state seats in Sarawak’s 11th election.
