A former aide to Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin has supported the party’s insistence that it remains a part of the Perikatan Nasional coalition.
Muhyiddin’s former senior private secretary, Marzuki Mohamad, disputed earlier claims that Bersatu had been dropped from PN after Muhyiddin expressed an intention to form a new political coalition.
“There is not a single clause in the PN constitution that provides for (instances when) a party’s membership is automatically dropped,” Marzuki (above) said on Facebook today.
He also shared screenshots of Clause 7.1 and Clause 7.2 of the PN constitution regarding the membership rights of component parties.
Emphasising that Bersatu was not begging to remain in PN, Marzuki said he highlighted the matter as it concerns rights, rules, and compliance with the coalition’s constitution.
“It is not a matter of Bersatu desperately wanting to stay in PN.
“How can you bear the trust of administering the country fairly and equitably, if the rights enshrined in the party’s own constitution are arbitrarily breached?” he asked.
‘Immoral, unconstitutional’
Commenting on Bersatu’s tribulations, Marzuki said others were not qualified to speak on moral aspects, as what has been done to the party shows “immoral” and “unconstitutional” behaviour.
The crisis between Bersatu and PAS, where the latter now spearheads PN, entered a new phase after the Islamist party’s president, Abdul Hadi Awang, announced on Aug 7 that Bersatu is no longer part of PN.
According to Hadi, who does not hold any post in PN, Bersatu was considered to have left PN after its leader expressed the intention to form a new coalition.
However, Bersatu disputed Hadi’s interpretation of the PN constitution, with its secretary-general Azmin Ali saying there is no provision allowing a member party to be dropped automatically.
