Changi Airport says the cause of the fire has been identified but did not state what it was.
PETALING JAYA: Three people suffered from smoke inhalation when a fire broke out at Terminal 2 of Changi Airport, Singapore, this evening.
According to a report by Singapore’s Straits Times, the police said they were alerted to a fire at the departure hall at 5.43pm.
The daily said it understood that the fire may have started at the air-conditioning unit area, and that all flights out of the affected terminal were subsequently grounded.
It also said landings were diverted to other terminals although there were still delays due to the peak period.
Changi Airport said on its Facebook page that the cause of the fire had been identified, but did not provide further details.
“The situation is under control. Flight operations at Terminal 2 are affected. We seek the understanding of the public.
“In the interest of ensuring safety, Terminal 2 remains closed,” it said.
The daily also stated that due to safety concerns, everyone at the airport was evacuated.
A multimedia videographer by the name of Aileen Teo told the daily that the evacuees appeared calm, and were given water and toilet breaks. -FMT
