Pulau Tikus assemblyperson says she hopes critics will accept the fact that the Penang Island City Council does not target any one race when it comes to shutting businesses.
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has been urged by a DAP politician to reveal the number of shops it has shut down this year.
Pulau Tikus assemblyperson Yap Soo Huey said if the city council could not identify at least 10 Chinese stalls they had taken action against, then the likelihood of selective persecution existed. However if they could, then critics must accept that the city council was not racially biased when it came to enforcing the law.
“But if MBPP does so (show proof of Chinese businesses shut down), then I hope everyone will accept the fact that MBPP does not target any one race.
“And we must accept that Mamu Gurney (the seafood stall) had to be closed down,” she said at a press conference at Jalan Tanjung Tokong here today.
Yap said there was a perception among some stall operators that the authorities turned a blind eye when it came to Chinese eateries that broke the laws.
She said this after city council secretary Yew Tung Seang said he would furnish statistics proving there was no bias in terms of enforcement.
Yew had said this after denying claims by two stall operators that the authorities often acted on eateries operated by Malays, but left Chinese and Indian businesses alone.
The duo had said this after their stalls were raided, an incident which saw them hijack a lorry belonging to enforcement officers.
Police have since arrested two men aged 28 and 34 for using criminal force to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty under the Penal Code.
They have been remanded for three days until May 7.
The two men, who filmed the hijacking, drove the lorry to the Pulau Tikus police station and lodged a report against the city council, but were subsequently arrested. -FMT
