Malacca Harapan pressures MACC to nab Umno man

Malacca Pakatan Harapan has urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to act on an arrest warrant issued last week against an Umno politician.
The politician in question, reportedly close to the Malacca state administration, was supposed to be charged with corruption on April 25.
“Although the arrest warrant was issued, he was not arrested or charged.
“We are asking the MACC what happened,” Malacca Harapan chairperson Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Amin told Malaysiakini after handing over a memorandum to the MACC this morning.
The memorandum was received by MACC deputy director of strategic communications Kamaruddin M Ripin, he said.
Shamsul Iskandar, who is also a PKR vice-president and Bukit Katil MP, said the MACC arrested a public official on Nov 28 last year on money-laundering charges related to local council projects in Malacca.
The anti-graft body also seized more than RM150 million in cash, vehicles, assets and documents from the man, the New Straits Times reported.
Among the items seized included RM12.6 million in cash in bank accounts, 56 land titles belonging to Yayasan Melaka in Sabah, six State Economic Planning Unit files related to land reclamation projects and seven vehicles, including a Toyota Vellfire and a BMW.
In February this year, the man was removed from his position in the Malacca City Council, before he was appointed to oversee the Tangga Batu Umno service centre and to serve as the special functions secretary with Malacca Umno.
Malacca Chief Minister Idris Haron, who is also Tangga Batu assemblyperson, approved the politician’s appointment and justified it, saying the man was merely appointed to a ancillary position, rather than a formal administrative position.

The memorandum handed over to the MACC states: “If an arrest is not made immediately, it will give the Malacca chief minister a bad perception because (the appointment of) the public official suspected of corruption will be seen as a political appointment by the chief minister.”
MACC chief commissioner Dzulkifli Ahmad announced yesterday that the commission would not act on any of its investigations into politicians until after the 14th general election.
Dzulkifli explained he did not want the MACC to be “dragged into politics, because every case will become election fodder”.- Mkini
