Rafizi: ‘Reports are attempt to drag me into religious, Malay issues’

PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli has claimed that the police reports lodged against him for allegedly slandering the syariah court are an attempt to drag him into a "religious, Malay-based" issue.
"I think the objective is to try to drag me and engage me in a religious, Malay-based issue, which is a distraction from the big (issues) that we are doing," Rafizi told reporters at Sungai Besi today.
Earlier today, Syariah Chief Justice Mahamad Ibrahim and Syariah High Court judge Muhamad Abdul Karim Wahab lodged separate police reports against Rafizi for defaming the syariah court.
Rafizi had allegedly defamed the court during a mock parliamentary session held by Pakatan Harapan MPs on April 10 to debate the bill to amend the Syariah Court (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Act 355).
He had said that raising syariah penalty limits without giving judges a salary hike could open the door to corruption. He also claimed that there had been more syariah court judges arrested for corruption, compared with those from the civil courts.
Rafizi said he will wait for the next steps from the authorities following the lodged reports.
He is also ready to face them and defend his statements in court, he added.
"I have my arguments which I will present in court, should it come to that," he said.
On a separate issue, Rafizi declined to respond to PKR Youth leader Adam Rosly Abdullah, who has been charged with providing false statements and documents related to his wealth.
"I don't think I should be paying that much attention to Adam, because if I pay attention to what a division youth chief says out of his frustration, I will actually have to answer another 50 people every day.
"It is normal that people in your party have different opinions about different things. I don't think I should entertain all of that," he said.

Adam had accused Rafizi of being motivated by an "improper agenda" with regard to the latter's remarks about his case.
Rafizi had previously suggested that Adam be relieved of his party position as this would help PKR distance itself from the matter.
He said today that the issue with Adam will be handled internally by the party.
"I think PKR has reacted swiftly to get him out of the way.
"It is important to get him out of the way and by that, it also means it is important to ignore him," Rafizi said.- Mkini
