Union plans to offer transport ministry an alternative that favours both employees and KTMB.
KUALA LUMPUR: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd’s employees union has urged the transport ministry to scrap the proposed Rail Network Access Agreement (RNAA) before a workshop scheduled for August to resolve the issue.
The workshop, expected to involve representatives of the union, KTMB management and the Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu) of the PM’s Department, is aimed at seeking a solution to break the impasse over the union’s opposition to RNAA.
Union president Abdul Razak Md Hassan hoped a settlement more favourable to the employees could be achieved at the workshop.
“We will draft an alternative, which is better and more progressive. We want to make sure no employee loses his job and KTMB will have scope to expand its business,” he said at a press conference at the headquarters of the union today.
Yesterday, the union leaders met Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai to discuss the dispute but no decision was made.
RNAA is a plan to carve up the company by placing the rail service operations under KTMB while transferring ownership, management and maintenance assets to a proposed Railway Assets Corporation or RAC.
The union fears the corporate exercise to strengthen the loss-making KTMB would lead to the dismissal of 4,000 employees.
Razak said the RNAA would greatly impact the employees from the aspects of service and national interest.
“If RNAA is not scrapped, we will go all out to oppose it,” he warned. -FMT
