Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) president Shafie Apdal will be spending his 60th birthday behind bars after the MACC secured a six-day remand against him.
The order was issued by Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus, FMT reported.
Shafie was arrested by the MACC at 9pm last night, four hours after he voluntarily turned up for questioning at the Sabah headquarters in Kota Kinabalu.
Earlier, Shafie arrived at the Kota Kinabalu courthouse in an ambulance. He was warded at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital overnight to treat his high blood pressure.
He was welcomed by some 500 supporters who waited outside the court gates.
Three birthday cakes were later reportedly brought into the courtroom to celebrate Shafie's birthday, with his family cutting the cake for him.
Previously, the MACC had also arrested two of Shafie's younger brothers and a number of Warisan leaders in its probe into the alleged misappropriation of at least RM1.5 billion in rural development funds intended for Sabah.
The RM1.5 billion allegedly siphoned came from a total of RM7.5 billion in funds reportedly allocated for rural projects in Sabah over a six-year period.
MACC is probing some 60 companies that were awarded projects for the supply of water, electricity, and roads to help people in rural Sabah.
Shafie held the rural and regional development ministry portfolio from 2009 to 2015. He has denied involvement in the scandal.- Mkini
