Beng Hock's death: Family hopes for criminal taskforce in fresh probe

The family of late DAP aide Teoh Beng Hock hopes that a criminal taskforce will be set up to facilitate the fresh probe into his death.
"We hope police will set up an independent taskforce to reinvestigate the case from a criminal angle. We hope it is an independent taskforce, and Bar Council and (Human Rights Commission of Malaysia) Suhakam must join in," said Beng Hock's sister Teoh Lee Lan.
Lee Lan said the family is also seeking a meeting with attorney-general Tommy Thomas to discuss how the government would proceed with the reinvestigation.
She has been assured by the family's lawyer, Ramkarpal Singh, that Thomas had verbally agreed to the meeting, adding that a written request would be sent tomorrow.
On June 20, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng announced that the cabinet had agreed to reopen investigations into Teoh's death.
Teoh was found dead on July 16, 2009, after falling nine floors from MACC's former Selangor headquarters in Shah Alam, where he had been held overnight for questioning. He was the political aide to Seri Kembangan assemblyperson Ean Yong Hian Wah.
A Royal Commission of Inquiry into his death implicated three MACC officers in his death.
However, former MACC Selangor investigations unit head Hishamuddin Hashim, assistant enforcement officer Arman Alies and assistant superintendent Mohd Ashraf Mohd Yunus were all cleared of any misconduct by the anti-graft body.
Asked whether the new government would act against the trio, Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching said she would raise the matter with the attorney-general, as well as Multimedia and Communications Minister Gobind Singh Deo.
Teo and Gobind are long-term advocates for the Teoh family.
She and the family were met at the ninth memorial service for Beng Hock at the Nirvana Memorial Park in Semenyih today. The service was also attended by members of the public and other leaders.
Other DAP leaders present included chairperson Tan Kok Wai, Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun, Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang, Balakong assemblyperson Eddie Ng Tien Chee, Kuala Kubu Bharu assemblyperson Lee Kee Hiong, Ayer Keroh assemblyperson Kerk Chee Yee, Bandar Utama assemblyperson Jamaliah Jamaluddin, Selangor Wanita deputy chief Sangeet Kaur Deo, and others.
PSM central committee member S Arutchelvan was also in attendance. Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu arrived later and was present at the press conference.
In his speech, Lim pointed out that the memorial service today was different since this is the first time representatives from the federal government are in attendance.
He stressed that Teoh Beng Hock has not been forgotten, and that the Harapan government will find out the cause of Teoh's death and seek justice. - Mkini
