AMPANG: The businessman with a “Datuk Seri” title who made the news for allegedly assaulting three Rela personnel last year now wants to compensate the officers.
Lawyer Rajpal Singh, representing Liow Soon Hee, informed the Magistrate’s Court here that he would write a letter of representation to Rela director-general Zulkifli Abidin this week to discuss possible compensation to the three officers.
“There is a provision under the Criminal Procedure Code for an accused facing charges on assault to be compounded,” he said.
Liow’s earlier bid to get the Attorney-General’s Chambers to drop the three charges of assault and one charge of obstructing a public servant from carrying out his duty was unsuccessful.
Magistrate Mohamad Firdaus Sadina Ali fixed Aug 14 for the outcome of the representation letter to be made known, after lawyer Michael Wong, who is representing Rela and the officers, told the court he had to seek instructions from the three officers and Zulkifli.
Liow previously apologised to Rela and the officers for his action, but they refused to accept his apology, saying they wanted the law to take its course.
He claimed trial last October to assaulting three Rela members outside a Chinese temple here and obstructing them from conducting their duties.
Liow was slapped with another two charges related to drug consumption in the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court, after he was charged with assault in October. -FMT
