Penang DAP chief Chow Kon Yeow has reminded party leaders who have obtained government posts not to be “arrogant,” and instead treat it as an opportunity to serve the people.
Chow, the current Penang chief minister, said the opportunity also enables DAP members to strengthen the party's struggle.
"Don't be arrogant, treat your posts as a chance to serve the rakyat, because at the end of the day, the challenges before us are great," Chow said before officiating the party's service centre in Berapit, run by assemblyperson Heng Lee Lee.
Also present were DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim, and PKR Machang Bubok assemblyperson Lee Khai Loon.
In his speech, Chow also urged DAP ministers and deputy ministers to continue to carry out their party duties.
To facilitate this, he added, DAP will open up several service centres and party branches to ensure that the party remains the people’s choice.
Oldest party
Chow also stressed that DAP has an important role to play in Pakatan Harapan, given that it has been struggling for a better Malaysia for over five decades.
"Certainly, whatever we say in Harapan will be given proper consideration, as other parties are still developing.
"DAP too is still developing, but we are matured. We must play our part, so that the party's voice will be appreciated and help determine the policies in Haparan.
"We are the oldest party in Harapan, we have been in this political struggle for 52 years, but we have a lot of bittersweet experiences about nation building and policies which can bring Malaysia to a higher level," said the Tanjung assemblyperson.
Chow also asked all party members with posts – from village development and security committee members to ministers – to bear in mind that their appointments were only made possible by the people.
"We are put into this posts for a reason, not to get higher salaries, or enjoy with the perks of the posts or convenience that comes with it," he said. - Mkini
