JOHOR BAHRU: Education Minister Maszlee Malik has criticised teachers who he said are not proud of teaching in primary schools, saying many preferred to teach in secondary schools.
“In Finland, the world’s number one provider of quality education, the best teachers are sent to primary schools to mould the personal development of the pupils and develop their language skills from an early stage,” Bernama reported him as saying.
“Today, teachers do not want to teach in primary schools.
“All want to go to secondary schools, especially those teachers with degrees,” he said during an event at Sekolah Kebangsaan Temenggong Abdul Rahman 2 (STAR2), his former primary school from 1981 to 1986.
Maszlee also proposed schools allocate special days where students are allowed to use only Bahasa Malaysia or English.
He said a specific day of the week could be chosen for each language. Students and teachers will have to use that one language the whole day at school.
The Simpang Renggam MP also urged the Chinese community in Johor to improve their Malay language skills. -FMT
