Gov't dissolve offices of special envoys, advisors to ex-PM


Nineteen entities set up under the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) including the offices of four special envoys and nine advisors have been dissolved effective yesterday.
This is part of the rationalisation exercise being carried out in the Prime Minister's Department.
The four special envoy offices being shut down are the offices of the special envoy to China, special envoy to India and South Asia as well as special envoy to East Asia.
The tenure of the special envoy to India and South Asia S Samy Velly is expected to end on Dec 31.
Former MCA president Ong Ka Ting, who was appointed as the special envoy to China in November 2011, had resigned in January this year.
The country's special envoy to East Asia Tiong King Sing is the Bintulu parliamentarian and the president of Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).
In September 2017, former inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar was appointed as the special envoy to enhance relations with the international community in combating terrorism, extremism and human trafficking.
The special envoy enjoys the status of a minister.
Nine offices of the advisors to the former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak and government have also been dissolved.
This includes the offices of the advisor to the prime minister on women entrepreneurship and professional development, on religion, on science and on socio-cultural affairs.
Rais Yatim's tenure as the socio-cultural advisor to the former premier ended on June 30.
