Liew: Upgrades must be done before KKIA Terminal 2 reopens

KOTA KINABALU: Upgrades must be carried out if the Government is to reopen Terminal 2 of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA), said Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Christina Liew (pic).
"Of course if we were to allow the Terminal 2 at Tanjung Aru to reopen, the airline or airport management must make sure that the facilities are up to standard and upgrades need to be carried out," she said.
She said it was still too early to say whether Terminal 2 will be reopened, as there were many aspects to look into.
Liew was responding to a comment made on Friday (July 20) by AirAsia Group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.
Fernandes had said that said the company wants to move back to Terminal 2 of the KKIA after being forced out three years ago, in the hope that it would spur not only tourism but also open Sabah to more international destinations.
Liew, who is also the Deputy Chief Minister, said that she however thinks that the proposal was worth the consideration, especially if it means bringing in more tourists to Sabah.
AirAsia was forced out of Terminal 2 by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad and began to operate at KKIA Terminal 1 on Dec 1, 2015.
The move, said Fernandes, saw flat growth for the airline over the last two years.- Star
