KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) says it is unable to take any action against Sarawak governor Taib Mahmud despite reports lodged as investigations show that he did not chair any meetings or make decisions regarding certain projects.
MACC chief commissioner Mohd Shukri Abdull said 15 investigation files had been opened since 2015/2016.
“The investigations showed that the allegations were partly true. The problem was that he (Taib) did not make decisions, and he did not chair meetings.
“There were no cases that could be linked to him as the decisions were made by others. We have handed the matter over to the Attorney-General’s Chambers,” he said, adding that nothing more could be done unless new information surfaced.
Speaking to reporters at Gerak Budaya today, he said Taib had not made any decisions on land matters or projects.
“The law does not allow us to make a decision against him,” he added.
Taib, who served as Sarawak chief minister from 1981 to 2014, has been linked to corruption allegations including claims on abuse of power, land seizures and bribery.
Taib took his oath of office as the seventh Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak on March 1, 2014 after stepping down as chief minister on Feb 28.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad earlier said that action could only be taken against Taib if reports were made against him.
“So far, there has been a lot of talk but no report. If Sarawakians want us to take action, they can complain and we will look at their complaints,” he said. -FMT
